Mission

Surrey Art Gallery's mission is to engage the public in an ongoing dialogue about issues and ideas that affect our numerous communities, as expressed through contemporary art, and to provide opportunities for the public to interact with artists and the artistic process. We accomplish these aims through exhibitions, programs, and publications of contemporary art.

Surrey Art Gallery also acquires, manages, researches, preserves, and exhibits work from its contemporary art collection, held in trust for present and future citizens of the City of Surrey.

The Future Surrey Art Gallery

For 45 years, Surrey Art Gallery has generated as much programming as our facility could support. The previous Cultural Plan for Surrey and the Gallery Strategic plan identified that our facility needs to evolve to serve our growing city.

Adopted in January 2017, the City Centre Master Plan introduced the vision of future cultural facilities, including the concept of an Interactive Art Museum as a catalyst for Surrey’s future development. In 2017, thousands of residents contributed to the development of the City’s Parks, Recreation and Culture Department’s 10 Year Strategic Plan. This Plan also recommended a downtown contemporary art museum that would be responsive to the digital world and support studios for artists in residence, maker labs, exhibit halls, and a small theatre. We are excited to share that this future facility will essentially be Surrey Art Gallery 2.0. Learn more in our Case for Support booklet.

Over the coming years, we look forward to a process of planning Surrey Art Gallery 2.0 together as it becomes the Interactive Art Museum. We will build on the successes of the TechLab, Open Sound, UrbanScreen, and our media galleries and will, as always, continue supporting and sharing with you the work of our brilliant local artists and contemporary art in all forms of media.

Funding

Surrey Art Gallery is a municipal art gallery. Our operation is financially supported by the City of Surrey and the Surrey Art Gallery Association. Our programming depends on operating grants from the Province of British Columbia through the Arts Council of British Columbia and the Canada Council for the Arts, as well as project grants from the Vancouver Foundation, Creative BC, the Government of Canada through the Department of Canadian Heritage, and other organizations and private businesses. We are also supported by gifts and donations from individuals.
