Interview tips and tricks

Review the volunteer opportunity

The volunteer opportunity provides an overview of the duties/responsibilities of the volunteer position. Read the posting carefully. Do some research to familiarize yourself with the volunteer program you are applying for.

Know your motivation

Ask yourself why you are applying for this volunteer opportunity – develop new skills, meet new people, prepare for employment, etc.

Highlight your strengths

This is your opportunity to tell your interviewers how you can contribute. Give examples of your work or volunteer experience, knowledge and passion. If you have any noteworthy accomplishments, awards or related information, share it with the interviewers. Don't be modest, but don't boast either.

Prepare answers to common interview questions

Use the STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) interview response technique to prepare for common interview questions such as teamwork, conflict situation, customer service.

Body language and tone of voice

Whether the interview is conducted in-person or virtually, your body language and tone of voice say a lot about your confidence, enthusiasm and level of professionalism. Maintain appropriate eye contact, sit up with confidence and answer questions clearly. If you don’t understand the question, ask the interviewer to repeat it. If you need time to think before answering a question, let the interviewer know. That is okay.

If this is your first interview, make the most of this opportunity to develop your interview skills. This is also the time for you to determine if this volunteer opportunity is meeting your goals and interest.
