Waves of red, orange, and pale blue are projected on the facade of Surrey City Centre Library whose windows are lit up. A skyscraper stands in the distance behind.

UrbanScreen is Surrey Art Gallery’s award-winning outdoor art venue.

Previously at Chuck Bailey Recreation Centre, UrbanScreen launched in Surrey Civic Plaza in December 2024. Dedicated exclusively to the display of digital art, UrbanScreen projects art after dark on the Surrey Bing Thom designed City Centre Library wall facing the plaza. The site showcases innovative, site-specific, digital art made by artists from around the Lower Mainland and further afield. For over 12 years, it has presented innovative, award-winning programming to commuters from across the Lower Mainland as well as audiences local to Surrey.

Exhibitions begin 30 minutes after sunset and end at midnight. During events at Surrey Civic Plaza where tents may obscure artworks, UrbanScreen goes dark.

UrbanScreen was conceptualized by artists Jer Thorpe, M. Simon Levin, and Sylvia Grace Borda during a residency in Surrey Art Gallery’s TechLab. Inspired by their vision, UrbanScreen ran from 2010 to 2022 on the west wall of Chuck Bailey Recreation Centre. Through the visioning of artists over these 12 years and the UrbanScreen Advisory Committee, the Gallery was able to secure funding from Pacific Economic Development Canada and the City of Surrey’s Public Art Reserve through Surrey Art Gallery Association to relocate the venue to the Surrey Civic Plaza. The Gallery continues to operate the venue with Showtech AVL who designed, maintains, and runs the equipment.
