Art Explorer Guide

Pick up an Art Explorer Guide, designed especially for kids. Friendly illustrated art monsters lead you through looking games, imaginative questions, and activities that explore our permanent installation artworks. When you’re finished don’t forget to stop at the front desk to get an art monster stamp and a button to take home! 

Art Maker

Sculpt your own artwork inspired by Maurice Van Der Beke’s large spinning artwork, Mandala After Prayer Wheel and Keith Rice-Jones’ ceramic installation, Monumental Sculptures. Have fun, experiment, and learn about movement, shapes, and 3D form in these hands-on activities. 

Art Thinker

Grab an Art Thinker card and respond to the art you’re experiencing through writing, drawing, or however you’d like! The cards include prompting questions: What inspires you? What do you feel? Take your card home or leave it at the Gallery to share with others.

I Am Listening

This audio-responsive interactive listening machine by Brady Marks contains microphones at the end of each wire. Make some noise underneath and eight white LED lights dance up each strand.

Drew Atkins - Retro-Perspective

Retro-Perspective

This vinyl glazing by Drew Atkins combines Coast Salish design elements with a retro look that speaks to Kwantlen First Nation’s long history on the land where Surrey now sits.

Monumental Sculptures

These five giant sculptures in the courtyard show artist Keith Rice-Jones's love of shapes and the relationships between forms. Two are from his geometric series; three are from his organic series.

Taiko Tao

This sculpture by Michael Dennis is made of dead pieces of fir and cedar, reanimated as a figure in our courtyard subject to rain and sun and processes of decay.

Jump

This other figurative sculpture in the courtyard by Michael Dennis shows how a mood can be expressed through a physical pose. Like Taiko Tao, Jump is made of wood found on the artist's Denman Island property.

The Fisherman's Charm

Commissioned for the Public Art Banner program, Anthony Gabriel’s artwork captures the symbolic power of the great blue heron in Semiahmoo culture.

Explore Bear Creek Park

We are fortunate to be nestled into Bear Creek Park, which features an outdoor pool and waterpark, a large playground, flower gardens, and the Bear Creek Miniature Train. It also has football and soccer fields, a running track, a fenced-in dog off-leash area, and a skatepark.

You'll find outdoor fitness equipment for cardio and strength training, nature trails and paved walking paths. Just a short walk down from the trail, catch a glimpse of spawning salmon or trout.
