Surrey, BC – Surrey Art Gallery invites families to engage in a creative afternoon of artmaking and interactive performances on Sunday, March 9 from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. inspired by the winter exhibition Rajni Perera: Futures running until March 16. All are welcome at this free drop-in event—children must be accompanied by an adult.

Rajni Perera: Futures features colourful, sci-fi informed paintings and sculptures that grapple with a changing climate and how humanity could adapt to this environment through strength and resilience. Visitors are invited to playfully explore the exhibition and try looking games and activities in the Art Monster Booklet guided by the Gallery’s Youth Docents.

In response to Perera’s work, visitors will create their own climate hero avatar, invoking their own inner climate activist. They will also invent a wearable climate change adaptation gadget with buttons, switches, and dials riffing off the inventive devices imagined in Futures. Finally, participants can design a sci-fi-inspired mask, reflecting on Perera’s adaptive wearable works such as Drought Mask.

The Gallery will host musical performances by Juno-nominated Ruby Singh who delivers highly engaging, interactive experiences using vocal percussion, rhythmic rhymes, live looping and an arsenal of eclectic instruments from around the world. Pick up free tickets on arrival for shows in the Studio Theatre at 1:30 p.m. or 3:00 p.m.

A dedicated sensory-friendly space supports quieter creativity with an accessible artmaking activity, resources like noise-cancelling headphones, soft seats, and sensory toys, in a comfortable, relaxed setting. Please contact us with any access needs or concerns you might have at artgallery@surrey.ca.
