City of Surrey Wins BCRPA Parks Excellence Award for Edgewood Park

Surrey, B.C. — The City of Surrey’s Edgewood Park has received the Parks Excellence Award from the BC Recreation and Parks Association (BCRPA). The award recognizes outstanding design and development of park spaces using natural elements or repurposing materials.

“Edgewood Park was designed to balance the needs of our natural environment with the needs of the growing South Surrey community,” said Mayor Brenda Locke. “Thank you to the BC Recreation and Parks Association for recognizing the City’s efforts to create beautiful outdoor spaces that support biodiversity and where we all can connect through nature and play.”

Edgewood Park is in South Surrey’s Grandview Heights neighbourhood, adjacent to Edgewood Elementary school. The park was developed with input from the community through multiple engagements between 2017 and 2020 to identify community needs. The park is also part of Surrey’s Green Infrastructure Network (GIN), a network of interconnected green hubs and corridors that are the backbone of the City’s Biodiversity Conservation Strategy.

The park features include an accessible playground, an adventurous play circuit including repurposed logs, a multi-sport court, a grassy field, a walking loop, a picnic area, a washroom, a pollinator meadow with educational signage, and a wildlife corridor creating an open space that supports biodiversity and wildlife while allowing for outdoor play and enjoyment for all. In December 2021, Edgewood Park received recognition as a Greener Greenspace for the City’s commitment to use ecological land care practices used to care for the pollinator meadow.

The City of Surrey manages over 800 parks. More than 200 parks include active amenities such as sports fields, sport courts, playgrounds, community gardens or picnic areas and over 600 parks protect natural areas, open space, and biodiversity as part of the larger green infrastructure network.
