Connect showcases the talents of twenty-two local teaching artists across a variety of media. Featuring paintings, digital photography, textile work, and more, this exhibition illustrates the value of a lifelong commitment to artmaking and creative education.
The Surrey Art Teachers Association is dedicated to promoting excellency in arts education for young people across the Surrey School District. Surrey Art Gallery and the Surrey Art Teachers’ Association have been collaborating on art education programs, as well as an annual exhibition of local children’s artworks, since 1983. For many teachers, their passion for art education stems from their own work as practicing artists. Yet with much of their time spent developing lesson plans and teaching, it is rare for teachers to take the spotlight in an exhibition of their own art.
Connect includes a body of work from diverse artists and teachers who thrive on investigating the mysteries of perception. As instructors, they encourage their own students to cultivate their abilities to see, observe, and create by making connections to the land, local communities, and cultural identities, to name a few.
About SATA
The Surrey Art Teachers Association (SATA) connects local art teachers and students in the pursuit of collegiality and excellence in visual arts instruction. As educators, they provide students with the tools to make connections with their curriculum and to learn about their world. Reflecting the demands of constantly changing educational paradigms, SATA members support each other through the sharing of resources, opportunities, knowledge, and ideas.
