In celebration of the Surrey Art Gallery’s 40th anniversary, five local artists plunged into the depths of the Gallery’s archives to chart its innovative, colourful, and sometimes humorous history. In a year-long residency, Jim Adams, Polly Gibbons, Cora Li-Leger, Haruko Okano, and Mandeep Wirk brought the archives to life through an ever-evolving installation in the main Gallery, highlighting unknown stories, behind-the-scenes photographs, commentaries and critiques, all the while allowing visitors to interact with a selection of themed documents.
As the year progressed, each artist modified the exhibit based on their research, introducing new ideas and objects to the display while expanding their definition and understanding of the archive. On September 19, 2015, the fourth and final phase of Re:Source was unveiled, featuring new research, images, and creative responses to the archive. Each artist selected a different theme around which to orient their research; topics included community outreach, invisible narratives, the interchange between art and society, time-based media, and multiculturalism. Exhibition programming included an Archive Artists Panel in November.
