Over 50 paintings, drawings, sculptures, textile arts, and digital art fill the walls and halls of the Surrey Arts Centre this summer. This is a great opportunity to see what emerging and established artists in the community are creating and the range of techniques and styles they use to express their ideas. Outstanding entries this year include a powerful photograph of an agricultural settlement in the United Arab Emirates (shown above), a video portrait of the Helmcken Falls near Clearwater, BC, and a functioning radio-controlled car. The jury this year includes Liz Toohey-Wiese (KPU Fine arts instructor), Cora Li-Leger (Surrey-based artist), and Lindsay McArthur (Surrey Art Gallery staff member).
The jury nominates artworks to receive first, second, third, and honourable mention awards across several categories: 1) painting; 2) drawing, mixed media, and printmaking on paper; 3) sculpture and fibre art; 4) photography; and 5) digital, performative, and new media art. Selected works show technical skill, innovative artistic thinking, and strength in addressing their theme. Visitors are also invited to vote for the People’s Choice Award announced at the end of the exhibit.
You can also visit the exhibition online on the Arts Council of Surrey's website.
