About 59 Views Above Surrey

"59 Views Above Surrey" is a map of Surrey that focuses on the area around the artwork’s installation site. Each block is filled with a photo of a sunset, and each photo was taken in the area it appears. The compass and 'you are here' graphics are done by hand to seem as though they were drawn directly onto the artwork. The title pays tribute to the Japanese artist Hokusai's woodblock series "36 Views Above Mount Fuji," an influential workfor Sahil’s practice.

About the Artist:

Sahil Mroke, a North Delta native, is an artist and designer based in the Lower Mainland. With a Bachelor's in Communication Design from Emily Carr University, he navigates diverse projects involving art direction, curation, and production. Sahil's personal practice emphasizes collaboration, drawing inspiration from collective creativity. His process is a tapestry that pulls from and weaves together the creativity and processes of his collaborators. His work involves graphic and communication design, photography, videography, and blends analog and digital media through collage. Design research principles guided him in deconstructing the essence of place, influencing his creations to resonate with the spaces he designs and reframing ideas of community.
