Walk & Roll to School Contest
Walk & Roll to school in October to win prizes, including the Mayor's Golden Shoe and $500.
Walk & Roll to School Week, which happens every October, is a chance for all Surrey elementary schools to encourage and celebrate students and their families walking, cycling, and scootering to school.
How your school can participate
- Register your school at least a week before the event starts.
- We’ll send you a starter kit (including an activity guide, recording posters, stickers, reflectors, safety materials, and banner) to help you plan your school’s Walk & Roll to School Week activities.
- During Walk & Roll, use the classroom recording posters to track your school’s active trips to school. Remember to take photographs of your students walking and rolling!
- After Walk & Roll, watch for an email to submit your school’s participation results. We’ll pull all of the numbers and stories together and announce the winners in November!
Why your school should register
- Registered schools are eligible to win fantastic prizes!
- Top prize: The Mayor’s Golden Shoe trophy, $500, and a fun prize pack (bike locks, bike bells, pedometers, and umbrellas)
- Four runners-up: A fun prize pack (bike locks, bike bells, pedometers, and umbrellas)
- Enjoy friendly competition with other schools in Surrey

- An ideas and activities resource sheet to help you plan your school’s celebration
- Recording Posters

- ICBC Pedestrian Safety posters
- Colouring sheets
- A banner for students to write or draw on
The bigger picture
Walking and cycling is the perfect way for kids to be active, help the environment and have a lot of fun on the way to and from school. In 2017 we spent $4.5 million on walking and cycling infrastructure around schools.
Walking and cycling to school builds regular physical activity into the daily routine, helps to decrease traffic congestion around schools, increases concentration and learning outcomes at school, builds community and provides a strong foundation for lifelong walking, cycling and transit transportation lifestyles.
