Surrey, BC – Two new exhibits are opening at the Museum of Surrey this spring. ‘Untangling Textiles’, a textile activation, opens May 10 in the Feature Gallery and runs until July 31. ‘Body Language’, an exhibit about Indigenous tattoos, runs inside the Indigenous Hall from May 14 to September 4.

Untangling Textiles invites visitors to experience a tapestry of cultures through fibres, tools, techniques, and finished textiles. Discover an array of fibres from the more common ones like cotton, wool, and silk, to the more unusual ones like soya by-products, milk protein and pineapple leaves.

From onsite textile demonstrations and the opportunity to view textile samples and tools, to fun hands-on activities, there’s something for all ages to enjoy.

“We are excited to showcase some of the incredible talent of local textile artists right here in Surrey,” said Textile Specialist Linda Montague.

The exhibit will also touch on the textiles industry as the second largest polluter on the planet. An eco-friendly station shows how to recycle old fabrics into something new to keep them out of the landfill.

Body Language will give visitors an intimate look at historic and contemporary Northwest Coast cultural tattooing and piercing. The exhibition explores designs on skin and their relationship to traditional clothing, rock art, jewelry, basketry, and weaving.

Contemporary artists featured in this exhibition are at the forefront of researching and reclaiming the traditional techniques of their respective First Nations and building awareness of the significance and protocols around cultural tattooing traditions.
