Surrey, BC – Surrey Art Gallery Association announces their April Thursday Artist Talk with Surrey Art Teachers Association (SATA) members Leanne Whynot and Sapira Sutton on April 3 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. titled “Pedagogy and Praxis.” Admission is free.

In conjunction with the exhibit Art by Surrey Secondary Students running until April 21, Surrey high school art specialist teachers will share their practices as both artists and educators, discussing the connections between their own creative endeavours and art education methodologies.

The Gallery’s Curator of Learning, Chris Dawson-Murphy, described the Gallery as having “a long-standing close working relationship with SATA, collaborating to develop programs that contribute to the learning of young artists” and in speaking of art teachers said, “they are often our first connection to the broader world of contemporary art and are an important early influence on our practice”.

Leanne Whynot is a Visual Arts Teacher at Ecole Salish Secondary. She holds a BFA from Emily Carr University, a BEd from SFU, and a PDP+ from Queens University. She sits on the BC Art Teachers Association executive as the Media Arts and Photography Representative. She also maintains a professional photography practice.

Sapira Sutton is an art teacher, SOGI representative, and sponsors the art club, GSA, and crochet club at LA Matheson Secondary School. Sapira has a BFA, a BEd, and an MEd with a specialization Society, Culture, and Politics in Education. She works in a range of media working experimentally with a focus on process over product. She strives for an inclusive classroom that centres her students’ full humanity to make space for everyone (including herself) to express themselves.
