Surrey, BC – The Surrey Fire Services wants to remind everyone during Fire Prevention Week (October 6 to 12) to make your smoke alarms work for you.

"Smoke alarms are vital for protecting your family from house fires," said Fire Chief Larry Thomas. "Our HomeSafe Inspection program ensures all homes, especially those of our most vulnerable residents, are protected. A working smoke alarm increases your chances of surviving a house fire by 74%, and we’re here to help ensure your smoke alarms are working."

Working smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms increase your chances of surviving a fire or CO exposure in your home by providing early warning. Over time, these life saving devices can stop working and in fact, have a maximum life span of 10 years. They must be checked regularly to ensure they are working as designed. Take the time to ensure your smoke alarm is working by pushing the ‘test’ button today.

Surrey Fire Services offers a free HomeSafe inspection program to those who require support in testing their smoke alarms. To find out more or to request a visit, please go to surrey.ca/HomeSafe.
