Surrey Council approves $7.5M road improvements along 148 Street

Surrey, BC – At the Regular Council Meeting on Monday, Council approved a contract for road improvements along 148 Street. The $7.5 million contract was awarded to Lafarge Canada to repave 148 Street between 58 and 64 Avenues, with one travel lane in each direction, on-street parking, and paths to make walking and cycling safer. In addition, a new signalized intersection will be added at 60 Avenue to improve neighbourhood access.

“Surrey Council continues to invest in our transportation network to ensure that motorists, cyclists and pedestrians are well served by our infrastructure,” said Mayor Brenda Locke. “These upgrades are part of the Strategic Transportation Short-Term Projects plan, which identifies this section of 148 Street as a key corridor to upgrade. Through this plan we will deliver $300M in transportation investments over the next four years to ease congestion and reduce commute times for our ever-growing population.”

Funding for this contract is available in the approved 2024 Transportation and Utilities Budget. Construction is expected to start March 2024, and be completed by fall, 2024. Road improvements will be completed in advance of the new Snokomish Elementary School opening planned for the Spring, 2025.

The Strategic Transportation Short-Term Projects plan also identifies 32 Avenue improvements between 184 Street to 188 Street. During the development of the project designs for the 32 Avenue improvements, staff identified an opportunity to coordinate the road improvements with BC Hydro’s planned duct bank project planned along the same 32 Avenue corridor. BC Hydro’s duct work project is an important investment for Surrey as it will support growth in the Campbell Height area.  Delivering BC Hydro’s planned duct work project as part of the upcoming 32 Avenue road improvements will help minimize the associated impacts on the road users and provide improved opportunities for economies of scale.

Staff are finalizing the agreement with BC Hydro in advance of construction of the 32 Avenue road improvements. The Agreement will establish BC Hydro as responsible for funding 100% of the construction cost related to the installation of the BC Hydro duct work.
