Surrey, BC – Surrey City Council has appointed South Surrey resident Archie Johnston as a community member of the Surrey Police Board. Johnston’s extensive expertise in financial reporting, risk assessment, and strategic planning will be invaluable to the Surrey Police Board as it navigates the complexities of community policing and works to effectively address local needs. This decision underscores Council's commitment to enhancing local representation on the Board and ensuring effective financial oversight of policing in Surrey.

“Mr. Johnston’s extensive financial background will be an invaluable asset to the Surrey Police Board, with cost containment being a priority during the transition,” said Mayor Brenda Locke. “His leadership in financial governance coupled with his dedication to serving our community will help ensure the Surrey Police Board reflects and responds to the unique needs of our residents. It was crucial for our Council to have more Surrey residents on the Board, and Mr. Johnston exemplifies the commitment we seek in community representation.”

Johnston brings with him a wealth of experience in financial governance and oversight, honed during his career as a Senior Audit Partner with KPMG LLP. In addition to his professional accolades, Johnston has actively contributed to community development through his role on the Surrey School Board’s audit committee, where he has leveraged his financial acumen to support educational governance. His significant involvement with various boards, including Surrey City Development Corporation’s Finance and Audit Committee and Development Committee and the Surrey Housing and Homelessness Society’s Finance Committee, further showcase his dedication to public service. Additionally, he has served as a member of the Surrey Board of Trade’s Council of Governors since 2006.

Johnston’s appointment is effective immediately, and Surrey City Council looks forward to the positive impacts his involvement will bring to the Surrey Police Board.

Earlier this month, Mayor and Council unanimously appointed Councillor Rob Stutt to the Surrey Police Board. Councillor Stutt brings over 40 years of experience in policing, police oversight, and investigations within the insurance industry, including service with the RCMP in Surrey. Councillor Stutt currently chairs the Surrey Public Safety Committee and sits on a number of other committees, including the Audit Committee and Finance Committee. His presence on the Board will bring valuable policing experience, helping to ensure that decisions are well-informed and effectively address the needs of the community.
