Surrey, BC – During the Regular Council Meeting on Monday, Surrey City Council took steps to address the city's housing crisis by approving three key motions aimed at increasing affordable housing and streamlining the development process. Under Council’s direction, staff are now exploring a variety of options to reduce red tape and increase housing supply.

"These motions are a significant step forward in addressing Surrey's housing crisis," said Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke. "Council's commitment to addressing the housing crisis is not just about providing more homes, it's about creating a community where everyone has access to affordable, sustainable, and inclusive living options. The approval of these motions is a testament to our dedication to innovation and collaboration.”

The motions, introduced by Councillor Pardeep Kooner, demonstrate a commitment to solutions that prioritize affordability, accessibility, and sustainability.

"We want Surrey to be the top destination for businesses in the region for commercial tenant approvals which is why we are committed to reducing red tape and streamlining our processes,” said Councillor Pardeep Kooner. “This Council is focused on capitalizing on our projected growth as the largest city in the province, and are ready and willing to make it happen by simplifying and expediting our processes where we can. We are committed to providing a diverse range of housing and commercial options that cater to the unique needs of our residents and our community.”

The three motions direct staff to:

  • Explore an alternative permit-issuing process to expedite building permits for minor interior renovations in eligible commercial buildings. This move is expected to reduce red tape and make it easier for businesses to improve their properties, creating a more vibrant and attractive downtown area.
  • Review single-family residential zones to accommodate three-level homes with suites, potentially with flat roofs and improved permeability on the lot. This initiative will help increase the supply of affordable housing options in Surrey, particularly for families and young professionals.
  • Investigate the possibility of incorporating suites in townhouse zones near public transportation hubs. This move will provide more affordable housing options for residents who rely on public transportation and reduce the need for lengthy commutes.
