Surrey, BC - The City of Surrey, with the support of Transport Canada, is pleased to announce the successful completion of a clean-up project in the Nicomekl River in South Surrey. Transport Canada completed its clean-up from September 9 to 11, 2024. Working with the City of Surrey, a variety of debris was collected, including abandoned or wrecked vessels, rafts, and associated garbage. In total, 11 industrial garbage bins were filled with debris and disposed of at a local dump.

“Bottom line is that we are taking action against environmental hazards in our communities. We are focused on keeping our lakes and rivers safe and clean,” says The Honourable Anita Anand, Minister of Transport.

“I am happy to see this cleanup project completed,” said Mayor Brenda Locke. “The Nicomekl River is a vital resource for our community and must be protected for future generations. The cleanup not only eliminates environmental hazards but also promotes responsible boating practices on the Nicomekl River. The City of Surrey is committed to maintaining the safety and beauty of our waterways. I encourage all boaters to act responsibly to help maintain our waterways and environment, and to also utilize the designated anchorages when available.”

The City of Surrey and Transport Canada remain committed to enhancing the experience for all river users while safeguarding the environment of our beautiful region.

The project was governed by the Canadian Navigable Water Acts and the Wrecked, Abandoned, or Hazardous Vessels Act, and reflects the City of Surrey’s dedication to sustainable environmental practices. On-going monitoring efforts will ensure the long-term health of the Nicomekl River area.
