Due to unforeseen circumstances, Russell Wallace will not be able to join us for the performance. However, as Solicitude was created in collaboration with Russell, we hope that you will feel his presence woven throughout the program through his music and words.
When you ask someone in the Northern St̓át̓imcets language their age, you don’t ask 'How old are you?' You say, 'Kwinaszánucw máqa7' — 'How many snows are you?' because winters are harsh, and lives are measured by how many winters one survives” says Lil'wat composer and singer, Russell Wallace. Join the a cappella ensemble musica intima and Russell Wallace explore what the winter season means to Russell through his Indigenous musical traditions and perspectives. Rounding out the concert will be music that reflects the season from musica intima’s own and different cultural traditions.
Before the performance, enjoy complimentary hot chocolate and the enchanting sounds of Celtic harpist Leanne Page in the lobby. Be sure to take in the breathtaking sight of the 60-foot Christmas tree in the plaza, setting the perfect scene for a magical holiday evening.
This concert will evoke the peaceful beauty of snow light on a dark winter's day, making it an unforgettable experience.
This show is part of the Holiday Music Series.
About musica intima
Grassroots beginnings took musica intima to international renown by pushing the boundaries of traditional choral performance and new perspectives on ensemble singing, making musica intima one of Canada’s most esteemed vocal ensembles. A shared leadership model allows the twelve members of intima to exchange ideas and freely explore musical creativity. Founded in 1992, musica intima is a collaborative conductor-less vocal ensemble which has championed Canadian music on stages around the world, and garnered a Western Canadian Music Award, and three JUNO nominations across ten commercially released albums.
As musica intima seeks to decolonize their musical practice, they are increasingly turning to collaborations with Indigenous artists from a variety of disciplines, including choreographer Olivia C. Davies, visual artist Sonny Assu, the Lexwst'í:lem Drum Group, Indigenous ethnobotanist and artist T'uy't'tanat Cease Wyss, Sherryl Sewepagaham, and Cree composer Andrew Balfour. musica intima premiered and recorded Balfour’s curation NAGAMO in May 2022, which was subsequently nominated for a 2023 JUNO award, and listed in the top ten of CBC Music’s Favourite 22 Albums of 2022.
