Curated by Taslim Samji, this exhibition acknowledges both the hardships and achievements of Ugandan-Asian Canadians, highlighting the stories of their struggles, successes, and new lives through biographic texts as well as curated artworks in a range of media including painting and photography.
In 1972, Ugandan dictator Idi Amin gave 80,000 Ugandan Asians 90 days to leave their homes. 6000 Ugandan Asians came to Canada in the largest migration of non-European refugees to the country at the time. 2022 marked the 50-year anniversary of this important part of Canadian history.
Artworks on display address themes related to immigration, and artists examine topics such as loneliness, mental health, grief, assimilation, and optimism through photography, painting, printmaking, and more. Exhibiting artists will also include Canadian immigrants from across the globe.
The exhibition was developed with the support of the BC Ugandan Asian Resettlement Committee, and first opened at the Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Centre in Vancouver in 2022. An accompanying book, Kampala to Canada, Untold Stories of Ugandan Asian Canadians will be available at front desk.
Samji will be joined by some of the exhibiting artists in a special panel for Thursday Artist Talk on Jan. 11.
