Indigenous Learning Centres
Learn about the City's plans to build two learning centres to provide unique, accessible venues to support Indigenous cultural practices.
The City has plans to build two new Indigenous learning centres: one in South Surrey and one in North Surrey. The development of these venues originates from ongoing dialogue and consultation with Semiahmoo, Kwantlen and Katzie First Nations. They will support the City’s reconciliation efforts, provide new artist opportunities, and support the transmission of cultural knowledge and practices.
The learning centres are one of several capital projects approved by City Council, with additional funding support from the Government of Canada, Heritage BC and Friends of the Surrey Museum and Archives Society. For more information, see the Capital Projects page.
North Surrey Indigenous Learning Centre
The North Surrey venue is expected to incorporate studios for hands-on production of art, classroom-style learning rooms, and gathering spaces.
Project updates
Consultation and facility development is underway, with detailed design expected complete in fall 2024 and construction in 2025.
Totest Aleng: South Surrey Indigenous Learning House
Construction of the South Surrey Indigenous Learning House was completed in early 2023 in Elgin Heritage Park (13723 Crescent Road). The venue addresses the need for Indigenous programming and provides a dedicated space to support artistic and cultural practices.
