Surrey proposes new sports Hall of Fame to celebrate local athletes
Public engagement survey now open
Surrey, B.C. – The City of Surrey is proud to announce a new Surrey Sports Hall of Fame which will honour the diverse sports heritage and enduring legacy of Surrey’s vibrant and active sports communities. Members of the community are encouraged to get involved by sharing their thoughts through an online survey. Additional engagement opportunities will be planned for later in 2025.
“A dedicated space to pay tribute to our City’s rich sports culture and history is long overdue,” said Mayor Brenda Locke. “The envisioned Surrey Sports Hall of Fame will honour the athletes and teams that have shaped the vibrant sports landscape in our City. This initiative not only celebrates our past, but it also motivates future generations to continue engaging, excelling, and contributing to Surrey’s thriving sporting community. In the long term, this permanent sports hall of fame is destined to be part of a future spectator facility. I encourage all of our residents to get involved and share their feedback.”
The Surrey Sports Hall of Fame will showcase and celebrate stories, achievements, and milestones that unite Surrey residents, cultivating a positive narrative about sport and community in the city. Supported by Museum of Surrey, this program and future displays will celebrate the outstanding achievements of athletes, coaches, builders, and other influential figures in Surrey sport.
“We are thrilled to help facilitate the creation of the Surrey Sports Hall of Fame,” says Lynn Saffery, Museum Manager. “We look forward to seeing how the Hall of Fame will engage and inspire visitors of all ages to be inspired in sports and explore Surrey’s amazing sports legacy.”
As a city that fosters inclusivity and a passion for physical activity, the Surrey Sports Hall of Fame will highlight how sports bring people together, transcend backgrounds, and help to create a sense of pride and belonging. It will serve as a reminder that everyone has a role in strengthening Surrey’s athletic spirit, whether by competing, coaching, volunteering, or supporting local sports initiatives. In the short term, temporary exhibitions will be installed at Museum of Surrey and select community facilities.
