Surrey, BC – An Art Connects event was hosted on Nov. 21, 2024 at Newton Cultural Centre, aimed to connect local creatives with one another and City of Surrey resources. The event kicked off with a talk by multi-disciplinary artist Keerat Kaur, followed by a meet and greet with City staff from Community Art, Cultural Grants, Cultural Planning and Public Art.

"I am pleased to see the first-ever Art Connects event take place in Surrey,” said Mayor Brenda Locke. “Supporting the arts is essential not only for individual expression but for enriching the cultural fabric of Surrey as a whole. This initiative is a testament to our continued commitment to fostering a vibrant community where creativity flourishes. By bringing together local artists and City resources, we are cultivating connections that spark collaboration and inspire innovation.”

This initiative is part of the city’s continuous efforts to engage and connect with the arts community. The event, and future Art Connects events, allow local artists to network, share ideas, learn about others’ creative disciplines and how City of Surrey might support their art practice.

Community art programming provides high-quality programs and events that connect residents through diverse artistic and cultural experiences. These events promote creativity, inclusivity and community spirit, aligning with the City’s vision of being a vibrant, welcoming and creative place to live.

"We were thrilled to host this dynamic event that brings together creatives from all over our community" said Kim Drabyk, Community Arts Manager. "Connecting like this is very beneficial for everyone and helps to ensure our programming is responsive and creative.”
