Surrey engages community in making city more accessible

Surrey, BC – The City of Surrey is seeking public feedback on its draft Accessibility Action Plan with the goal of enhancing accessibility, removing barriers and creating a more inclusive community. Feedback through engagement opportunities will help prioritize actions and guide enhancements in the plan over the next three years.

“This plan reflects our commitment to creating a more accessible Surrey,” said Mayor Brenda Locke. “I invite you to help shape the Accessibility Action Plan. We want to hear what priorities are most important to you and ensure that everyone, regardless of age or ability, can access and enjoy everything our vibrant city has to offer.”

As of September 1, 2023, the draft plan became available on the City website in accordance with the Province’s Accessible British Columbia Act. The plan was developed with input from the Surrey Accessibility Leadership Team and the City's internal accessibility committee to ensure it aligns with provincial accessibility requirements.

The plan commits to accessibility and outlines actions across five key areas. To be updated every three years, it includes short-term, long-term and ongoing actions, affecting our buildings, public spaces, programs and services, information and communication methods. The goal is to create a city where everyone feels welcome by making improvements to City programs, services and facilities, ensuring they are accessible to all, regardless of age or ability.

All community members, including those who support individuals facing accessibility challenges, are invited to help the City prioritize actions that will shape a more accessible future by participating in the following engagement opportunities:
