Surrey, B.C. – At Monday's Regular Council Meeting, Surrey City Council will consider contract awards for two major road widening projects aimed to reduce congestion and support city growth. The combined contracts, totalling over $19M, include upgrades to 72 Avenue from 188 Street to 196 Street and 64 Avenue from 152 Street to 164 Street. The projects will upgrade the roads to four lanes, while integrating pedestrian and cycling infrastructure to improve connectivity and accessibility for our growing population.

“As Surrey's incredible growth continues, it is imperative that we build infrastructure that will connect our communities,” said Mayor Brenda Locke. “Widening and building new roads along 64 Avenue and 72 Avenue will not only alleviate congestion but will also create essential east-west links that our city urgently needs. These improvements are long overdue and reflect our Council's commitment to building a transportation network that keep pace with our city’s rapid expansion. By committing to this vital infrastructure, we are paving the way for a more connected Surrey, ultimately enhancing  quality of life and safety for all."

The 64 Avenue project is expected to start in May and be completed in 2026. Construction will include:

  • widening the road from two to four lanes
  • adding a multi-use pathway for cycling and walking on the south side
  • road paving along 152 Street between 64 Avenue to 68 Avenue
  • repairs to the railway crossing at 64 Avenue and 152 Street intersection
  • a short closure of 152 Street near the 64 Avenue intersection to speed up railway crossing resurfacing work

“These improvements along 64 Avenue mark the final phase of a multi-phased program to create a continuous four lane corridor from 120 Street to 196 Street,” says Rafael Villarreal, Director of Transportation. “The improvements along 72 Avenue are also part of a larger strategy to establish a continuous route from 120 Street to 196 Street, enhancing traffic flow and connectivity within the city.”

The 72 Avenue project is also expected to start in May and be completed by 2026. Construction will include:

  • widening the road from two to four lanes
  • adding sidewalks and bike lanes on both sides of the road
  • creating approximately 74 on-street parking spaces on nearby streets to offset the reduction of parking between193 Street and 196 Street
  • retaining 97 on-street parking spaces along 72 Avenue
