Surrey, BC – During its Regular Council Meeting on Monday, Surrey City Council will vote on $10.65M in road improvement contracts. Council will consider a construction contract for road improvements on 140 Street from 88 to 92 Avenues, and another for design and construction services for arterial widening on 72 Avenue between 144 and 152 Streets.

"Investing in our road infrastructure is essential for the continued growth and development of our community,” said Mayor Brenda Locke. “The upgrades to 140 Street and 72 Avenue extend beyond mere road widening; they are about establishing safer and more efficient pathways for all—drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians alike. These projects not only alleviate congestion and accommodate our expanding population, but they also maintain our major road network over the long term. Our Council is dedicated to enhancing our road network, and over the next four years, we are investing $300 million in transportation upgrades.”

One of the primary arterial corridors earmarked for enhancements in the City’s Strategic Transportation Short-Term Projects is 140 Street from 88 Avenue to 92 Avenue. Pending approval, a $10 million contract will facilitate the expansion of 140 Street from two lanes to four, integrating essential pedestrian and cycling infrastructure, as well as a new traffic signal. This initiative aims to accommodate the growing population in Newton and address the increased traffic volumes along 140 Street. Construction is anticipated to commence in October 2024 and be completed by the end of summer 2025.

In addition, if approved by the Surrey City Council, a consultant agreement will be established to provide engineering services for the four-lane widening of 72 Avenue, from 144 Street to 152 Street. This project is designed to enhance traffic flow, improve safety, and integrate cycling and walking pathways wherever feasible. The design phase is expected to begin in September 2024, with completion projected for fall 2025.

Funding for both contracts are available in the 2024 Transportation Budget.
