Surrey Council awards contract for two eco-friendly dump trucks for winter maintenance
During the Regular Council Meeting on Monday, Surrey City Council approved a $1.3M a contract for the purchase of two compressed natural gas (CNG) fuelled tandem axle dump trucks equipped with necessary winter maintenance equipment.
Surrey, B.C. – During the Regular Council Meeting on Monday, Surrey City Council approved a $1.3M a contract for the purchase of two compressed natural gas (CNG) fuelled tandem axle dump trucks equipped with necessary winter maintenance equipment. Surrey conducted a Request for Quotation and found that transitioning to these eco-friendly vehicles would not only reduce greenhouse gas emissions but also provide considerable operational savings.
“The City of Surrey is committed to enhancing our fleet with environmentally sustainable options that benefit both our operational efficiency and our community’s health,” said Yonatan Yohannes, Director of Engineering Operations. “This investment reinforces our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint and supports our position as one of the largest municipal producers of renewable natural gas which fuels the City’s operational vehicles. By investing in these eco-friendly vehicles, we are paving the way for a greener future while ensuring our city's winter maintenance services remain safe and efficient for all residents.”
The Engineering Department initiated this procurement process as part of the 2024 Fleet Capital Replacement Budget to replace aging equipment that no longer meets operational standards. The decision to invest in these eco-friendly vehicles aligns with Surrey’s commitment to sustainability and efficient municipal services and ties in with the Surrey Biofuel Facility and its related ecosystem.
Staff advised Council that the trucks were indeed sourced from the U.S. as there were no Canadian manufacturers of these types of vehicles.
Funding for this contract falls within the 2024 Fleet Capital Replacement Budget, allowing for a seamless integration into the City's operations.
