Surrey Completes Road Safety Enhancements in Time for Back to School
The City of Surrey has installed additional road safety measures this year to make it safer for children to get to school this fall.
Surrey, BC – The City of Surrey has installed additional road safety measures this year to make it safer for children to get to school this fall.
“The City of Surrey takes road safety and the well-being of our children very seriously,” said Mayor Brenda Locke. “I’m pleased to see that these road safety improvements have been completed just in time for the school year. I urge all drivers to slow down, be vigilant and do their part to ensure all of our children arrive safely at school every day, setting the stage for a successful year ahead.”
Prioritizing road safety near schools and parks helps the City meet its Vision Zero commitments to ensure everyone can travel safely across the city whether driving, cycling or walking.
The City’s school road safety measures included the following improvements:
- The City has added ‘SCHOOL’ pavement markings near 27 schools over the summer. These prominent yellow markings are aimed at alerting drivers to slow down and be cautious in school zones.
- The City installed over 25 new speed humps this year to roads near schools and parks throughout the city. These traffic calming measures are intended to slow down vehicle speeds to make it safer for all road users including children walking and cycling.
- The City completed sidewalk and crosswalk improvements near the following elementary schools:
- South Meridian Elementary School - new sidewalks and a pedestrian crossing installed along 14 Avenue between King George Boulevard and 161B Street
- Ta’Talu Elementary School - 20 Avenue (164 St – 165 St)
- Douglas Elementary School – installed curb bulge and new crosswalk at 172 St and 2B Avenue
