Surrey, B.C. – The City of Surrey has begun construction on the first phase of road widening 132 Street between 72 Avenue and 76 Avenue to add additional vehicle lanes, new left turn lanes, and a multi-use path for walking and cycling.
“Upgrading 132 Street will reduce congestion, improve road safety and support growth in Newton,” said Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke. “With Surrey’s population projected to reach one million people as early as in the next 20 years, continued investment in transportation is essential to support the increasing demand for efficient and reliable travel options. Council has prioritized high growth neighbourhoods such as Newton for road expansion in order to ease congestion and reduce commute times for our citizens.”
Road improvements include:
- road widening from two to four travel lanes to improve traffic movement
- adding multi-use paths on east side of the road to make it safer to cycle and walk
- installing a pedestrian crossing at Comber Way to make it safer to cross the street
- adding new left turn lanes to improve traffic flow
- upgrading bus stops to improve access to transit
The project will also involve replacing aging sanitary sewers and watermains along 132 Street. Subsequent phases for widening between 76 Avenue and 84 Avenue will be undertaken.
Phase 1 construction between 72 Avenue and 76 Avenue will cost $9.2M and is anticipated to be complete by end of 2025. Phase 2 includes road widening between 76 Avenue and 80 Avenue and is anticipated to begin in fall 2025, followed by Phase 3 road widening between 80 Avenue and 84 Avenue anticipated for 2026.
