Lace up your skates—Surrey’s arenas are back in action, and hockey season has begun! Whether you’re a seasoned player or just starting out, our hockey programs cater to all ages and skill levels. The fast-paced nature of hockey is one of its best features, but it also makes safety a top priority. Understanding the role of your equipment is essential. Discover how your gear not only protects you from injury but also enhances your performance, allowing you to fully enjoy the game.

Note: The equipment mentioned here primarily applies to hockey skaters. Goalies require additional and/or different gear to ensure their safety and performance.

Neck Guard: Small but Crucial

Neck guards play a crucial role in protecting one of the most vulnerable parts of the body. The neck is at risk from stray sticks, pucks and even skate blades. Wearing a neck guard can help players avoid cuts and prevent serious injuries. It’s a small piece of equipment that can make a significant difference in ensuring a player’s safety on the ice.

Helmet & Face Shield: The Defensive Duo

A CSA-certified helmet with a face shield or cage is another crucial piece of equipment. This helmet is crucial for protecting the head from impacts, preventing concussions and other long-term head injuries. The face shield or cage adds extra protection, safeguarding the face from pucks, sticks and accidental collisions. This is especially important for younger players who are still developing their skills and awareness on the ice.

Elbow, Shin & Shoulder Pads: Full-Body Fortification

Elbow, shin, and shoulder pads are essential for protecting players from impacts and falls. Elbow pads guard against collisions with the boards, ice and other players. Shin pads protect the lower legs from pucks and sticks, while shoulder pads shield the chest, shoulders and upper back from impacts and falls. These pads absorb shocks, reduce the risk of fractures and bruises, and let players focus on their performance without compromising mobility or fearing injury.

Gloves, Pants & More: Complete Coverage

Gloves are essential for protecting your hands and fingers while providing flexibility and grip on your stick. Hockey pants protect your hips, thighs and tailbone, while still allowing for effective skating and maneuvering. Additionally, a jock or jill is crucial for safeguarding the groin area from impacts.

Skates: The Foundation of the Game

Skates form the cornerstone of a player’s performance, allowing them to glide across the ice with speed and agility. Properly fitted and sharpened skates are essential for maintaining balance and control on the ice. They also protect the feet and ankles from impacts and falls. Our skate shops provide skate and helmet rentals, along with skate sharpening services.

Gear Up for Safety and Performance

Whether you’re a new or a skilled player, understanding the role of your gear is key to enjoying hockey safely and effectively. Every item, from neck guards to skates, is essential in protecting you from injuries and enhancing your performance on the ice. So, gear up, stay safe and enjoy the excitement of the game. After all, the best way to play is with confidence, knowing that you’re well-protected from head to toe.
