Surrey, B.C. – The City of Surrey is encouraging the community to recognize and celebrate the importance of pollinators during Pollinator Week from June 17 to 23. Pollinators are essential for maintaining healthy ecosystems and the production of food, yet they are declining at an alarming rate due to factors including habitat loss, pesticide exposure, diseases and pests, and climate change.

"Ensuring the health and well-being of pollinators and their habitats is important for our community,” said Neal Aven, Director Parks. “By making a few simple changes to your outdoor space, you can significantly contribute to the protection of these vital creatures. Consider transforming your garden into a pesticide-free haven, planting a diverse array of native, pollinator-friendly plants, or creating a shallow water source with rocks and twigs to provide a safe and refreshing oasis for pollinators. Every small step counts, and together, we can make a meaningful difference in the preservation of these essential species."

The City of Surrey is committed to preserving and enhancing pollinator habitats as part of its biodiversity conservation efforts. The City continues to be recognized for its pollinator conservation efforts through its certification as a Pollinator Steward by Pollinator Partnership Canada, an organization dedicated to the protection and promotion of pollinators and their ecosystems through conservation, education and research. The certification was earned through a continued investment in projects that create essential habitat and features to support native pollinators across the city.
