Surrey, B.C. – The City of Surrey is set to kick off its fall tree planting season with a National Tree Day event on Saturday, Sept. 28, at Hawthorne Rotary Park from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Residents will have the opportunity to plant more than 500 native trees and shrubs. The event is open to everyone with music and activities for families provided.

“Our tree planting events are a wonderful way for residents to take an active role in shaping the future of our city’s green spaces,” said Mayor Brenda Locke. “By volunteering, you’re not only contributing to a healthier environment but also helping to foster a sense of community and shared responsibility for our natural resources. I encourage everyone to come out, get involved, and make a positive impact.”

No experience is required. Gloves, tools, and guidance will be provided. Participants are encouraged to wear closed-toe shoes and dress for the weather. The event will go ahead rain or shine but may be cancelled if there are strong winds or severe weather.

This event is part of Surrey’s Releaf tree planting program, which engages the community in growing the city’s urban forest. Other planting events will take place on Saturday mornings through October from 10 a.m. to noon at various parks:

  • Clayton Park, Saturday, Oct. 5
  • Robertson Drive Park, Saturday, Oct. 12
  • Latimer Park, Saturday, Oct. 19
  • Sullivan Park, Saturday, Oct. 26

The Releaf program is one of many initiatives by the Parks Division aimed at involving residents in the care and maintenance of Surrey’s parks and urban forest. Since 1991, volunteers have planted thousands of trees and shrubs, improving air quality, increasing shade, supporting wildlife, and boosting biodiversity in local parks.
