The City of Surrey may dispose of surplus City-owned land, subject to City Council approval. If City property has no future use by the City for infrastructure or civic requirements it may be deemed surplus and made available for sale.

Surplus City land may result from historical tax sales, remnant parcels left over from park or road acquisitions, unopened road or lane or other City projects.

Methods of selling surplus City property

Directly to purchaser

If the surplus City property is undevelopable on its own or has very limited marketability, the City may enter into a contract of purchase and sale directly with an individual or company.

These types of sales usually involve remnant parcels of City land that adjoin the interested parties property, and often result in land consolidations.

Provided the City receives market value for the property, the City may sell surplus land directly to an individual or company as part of a larger consolidation in support of planned and orderly development.

Public advertising and MLS

If a property is developable independently, the City typically advertises these types of sales to the general public through the City’s Realty Services page, local and regional newspapers, and the Fraser Valley Real Estate Board’s Multiple Listing Service (MLS).

Information specific to the property, including the City’s contract of purchase and sale document, is made available on the Realty Services page. This process allows the general public the opportunity to submit offers.
