How did you get started in volunteering?

In grade 7, we were often giving small tasks within the school. Such as monitoring younger grades during lunch, ushering classrooms in during assemblies, and many more activities. This worked as a start to my volunteering, creating an environment I was comfortable in and enjoyed working with.

What are your most memorable moments during your volunteer service?

I remember volunteering for a day camp and going on a small hike. It was not a hard one at all but still quite a journey. I recalled the joy and excitement all the kids had when we saw the view. I had never gone hiking before but I was still amazed by the view it offered.

What kept you coming back to volunteer?

I come back knowing I will learn something new, that every time I volunteer it will be different. You meet so many new people with so many unique backgrounds and personalities. Even though you commit to the same task something will change. Often times when I volunteer for day camps it is different every day. The first day everyone is shy and getting to know each other but by Friday, there is an energetic and connected environment.

What would you say to someone who is considering volunteering?

Try many different types of volunteering, there will be one you like. Volunteering comes in so many different forms, if you don’t enjoy one you will enjoy another. I enjoy working with kids so I often find myself volunteering with day camps and classes. I have friends who enjoy time alone so they prefer volunteering in parks and planting native species.

When we got the opportunity for a photo and video shoot for City of Surrey’s social media profile.

When I learnt how to make Bunting flags and other crafts and guided the same to public in various events.

What kept you coming back to volunteer?

My interest to meet and talk to people. I love to explore and learn new things and volunteer job with Our City fulfill my wish.

What would you say to someone who is considering volunteering?

How did I get started in volunteering?

I was actively seeking opportunities to get involved in my community through volunteering. I thought it would be fantastic to contribute to the City of Surrey. As I was seeking various options, I came across a position for a Patron Support Assistant for the Women’s and Girls Swim program. This immediately caught my attention, as it seemed like a wonderful opportunity to start my volunteering journey in a supportive environment. I felt that this role would not only allow me to give back to the community but also gain valuable experience in helping others while providing a safe and welcoming space for women and girls.

What are your most memorable moments during your volunteer service?

During my time volunteering as a Patron Support Assistant, I have had opportunities of making countless memories with the individuals who participate in the Women’s and Girls Swim program. The moments that stand out the most are with the children who frequently attend the program. Whether it’s offering assistance on the pool deck or simply engaging with them. I had the chance to create meaningful connections and offer support when needed. Building relationships with these children and the other participants has been incredibly rewarding, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to be a part of their experiences while encouraging a fun and safe environment.

What kept me coming back to volunteer?

Everyone I have encountered through my volunteering journey at Aquatics has been polite and respectful. Making my volunteering experience a positive outcome. A friendly and supportive atmosphere among the participants and staff, which had lead me to continue volunteering in this environment.

What would I say to someone who is considering volunteering?

Someone who is considering volunteering, I would recommend this program to them! The atmosphere is welcoming and supportive, with friendly participants and kind staff members! A great opportunity to give back to the community and meet new people!

How did you get started in volunteering?

I got started in volunteering because I was passionate about getting involved with my community and making a positive impact. Volunteering at the Youth Drop-in seemed like the perfect opportunity. It was a chance for me to interact with youth, build connections, and create an environment where everyone could have fun. I wanted to give back to the community that gave me so much.

What are your most memorable moments during your volunteer service?

Every moment I spent volunteering at the Youth Drop-in was memorable. I loved being able to interact with the youth and get involved in the different events we organized. One of my favourite things was being part of the team that helped plan and pull off exciting activities, whether it was hosting a game night, a sports event or a movie night.

What kept you coming back to volunteer?

What kept me coming back to volunteer was the incredible environment at the Youth Drop-in. From the very first day, I felt welcomed by both the youth and the staff. Not only did I make good friends, but I also became part of a team where everyone shared the same passion for helping others. There was always something exciting happening. The positive atmosphere and the opportunity to make a real difference is what kept me coming back.

What would you say to someone who is considering volunteering?

Volunteering is such a meaningful way to make a positive impact, both in your community and on yourself. It’s an opportunity to give back, learn new skills, and connect with others. Volunteering helped me develop a deeper understanding of what it means to be part of a community and how small efforts can lead to big changes. If you want to make a difference, learn, and have fun while doing it, volunteering is a great way to make an impact!

How did you get started in volunteering?

I first volunteered at my school back in grade 9 when me and my friend randomly decided to volunteer for the Parent Teacher Interviews, it ended up being a great experience being able to help out the parents which made me want to keep doing it the next following years creating an tradition. But that was small, my main volunteering started at the Art Gallery when I was looking into volunteering at some other places and when I found it on the Surrey website I didn’t hesitate to apply.

What are your most memorable moments during your volunteer service?

I remember when I did my first weeklong camp in the summer, it was a great experience and during the week I built a stronger connection with all the children through helping them with their projects, this was a great feeling to know I'm someone they like and trust because they kept wanting to talk and ask questions. Also, during that camp creating connections with the teacher and the other volunteer, so my most memorable moments would be creating those connections

What kept you coming back to volunteer?

I would say what kept me coming back is the atmosphere and the accomplishment of helping others. Every place I have volunteered at has a great atmosphere which was so familiar and welcoming which made me feel comfortable and not second guess coming back.

What would you say to someone who is considering volunteering?

I would say 100% do it, through volunteering you will undoubtedly create many memorable experiences which you will cherish and had a great time creating. The act of helping others is undermined and should be done more often, volunteering is the perfect opportunity for that where you feel proud, and you know you made someone else happy.

Surrey Libraries READ-Ability Home Delivery Service and Emergency Support Services (ESS)

Woman in a blue top smiling at a restaurant table with a cup of tea.

How did you get started in volunteering?

I always love most animals.  I was in the process of being a volunteer for Surrey’s SPCA when COVID hit, then I saw another volunteer posting for Surrey Libraries to deliver books to residents when the world started opening up again after COVID was under control.

What are your most memorable moments during your volunteer service?

I don’t have these moments yet but I am sure it will occur at some point down on the road.

What kept you coming back to volunteer?

In my working life I devoted too much time on my job, just enough time for my family, so I felt a bit of disconnect with the community I am living in.  Now being a new retiree, I want to contribute some time to the society by participating in different not-for-profit organizations or local public community activities.

“Giving is living.  If you stop wanting to give, there’s nothing more to live for. - Audrey Hepburn”

What would you say to someone who is considering volunteering?

Just do it.  You will eventually find something you are passionate about and create your impact on this world.

How did you get started in volunteering?

Retiring from full time work at the end of 2017, I was determined to fulfill a promise to myself to volunteer in the community. In January 2018, I noticed two different appeals for volunteers.

One was a program to train docents to lead school tours at the Surrey Art Gallery - a public art museum in Metro Vancouver second only in size and accreditation to the Vancouver Art Gallery. Elementary school teachers in Surrey can book an art workshop for their class; this is led by a certified art instructor. Along with the workshop, the class gets a tour of the current exhibitions at the art gallery, led by volunteer tour guides or docents. This would be an opportunity to learn more about contemporary art and then share my experience with young people.

The other was a call for people to help with You Wear It Well - Just for Grads, an annual event to provide students with grad outfits, at no cost, to make them look and feel their best. The dedicated core group of community volunteers works year-round to secure, and store, donated formal wear and accessories. Once a year, more volunteers come together to help secondary school seniors get ready for their graduation celebrations.  Here I could use my decades of sewing expertise to help the alterations team.

What are your most memorable moments during your volunteer service?

As a gallery docent helping to lead school tours, I am repeatedly amazed by the insights of elementary school students. So many times, they have opened my eyes to a different way of seeing and understanding art. I can look at some pieces many times and still notice new things through their fresh viewpoints. Sharing special moments from our tours with the docent team enriches us all, adding to the ongoing education we receive from the art gallery.

As a sewist, I share in the uplifting vibe of an event promoting inclusion and self-esteem. Each grad has a ‘personal shopper’ to help them choose a formal outfit to keep. Minor alterations are completed on the spot, followed by a mini makeover from volunteering professional stylists. The finishing touch is a complimentary professional photo. Their beaming faces are the greatest reward. And the camaraderie of the team in a madly paced environment - transforming up to 300 students in a one-day event - is unmatched.

What kept you coming back to volunteer?

The fellowship of the docent team, the leadership from the volunteer coordinator, the education in art and ways of sharing it, and the students themselves – all are very important parts of the overall docent experience. I know the school field trip program would not be possible without volunteer participation. Our contributions are needed and valued. Some of the most memorable moments from my own early school years were arts-related experiences added to the regular curriculum. These experiences invite school students to engage with the wider community.

The same can be said for You Wear It Well. These programs expand horizons for young people, demonstrating that their community cares about them. I believe that participating in community-supported activities enriches everyone.

What would you say to someone who is considering volunteering?

To anyone considering volunteering, I would say, “Go for it!” You may find your first choice to be a good fit. If not, don’t give up – continue to be open to new opportunities. Many essential community programs exist and flourish only by relying on teams of dedicated volunteers. After eight years of rewarding experiences, I am grateful to feel valued in my role as a volunteer and for the friendships I have made along the way.

How did you get started in volunteering?

I was looking for a local volunteer opportunity, and having visited the farm as a kid, and with interests in history, fashion, and architecture, I thought that the farmhouse would be a good fit.

What are your most memorable moments during your volunteer service?

One of my favourite things about volunteering at the Stewart Farm is being able to show off my period costume, especially to kids! I love the curiosity and excitement they share with me. One of the best comments I’ve gotten so far was that I look like a vampire. :-)

What kept you coming back to volunteer?

Coming back to volunteer meant I always learned something, met someone new, or heard some fantastic stories — especially from the older volunteers. There is so much wonderful insight that I’ve gained from the other volunteers, and I enjoy being able to hear all the different stories and perspectives about Surrey’s past.

What would you say to someone who is considering volunteering?

I would say that it’s really important to pick an area for volunteering that suits your interests. Starting in an area that you like or already know at least a little bit about makes it easier to start discussions and engage with others. When you’re passionate or curious about something, it becomes a more rewarding experience: not only do you get to share your knowledge, but you also get to learn so much from others.

Age Friendly Volunteer Program

How did you get started in volunteering?

After losing my job, I realized that it was the perfect time to focus on giving back to my community. Volunteering has become a way for me to connect with others, and it has reminded me of the joy I find in helping people. As a social person who genuinely loves being around others, this experience has been incredibly fulfilling. It’s not just about the work I do, but the relationships I built along the way. Through volunteering, I’ve found a renewed sense of purpose and the satisfaction of making a positive impact on the lives of those around me.

What are your most memorable moments during your volunteer service?

One of my most memorable moments volunteering in the English Conversation Program was seeing the participants grow in confidence. At first shy and hesitant, they soon opened up and held full conversations. A highlight was when a struggling student excitedly shared their weekend plans. It was also rewarding to introduce them to the City of Surrey’s programs for kids, adults, and seniors, helping them connect with the community while improving their English.

What kept you coming back to volunteer?

What kept me coming back to volunteer was my love for people and the joy of making a positive impact. I enjoyed sharing the City of Surrey’s programs, like fitness classes and the WALKit program, which encouraged active living. Through WALKit, I made great friends who share my love for staying active, and we often join other fitness classes together. Helping people stay connected, healthy, and engaged in the community gave me a deep sense of fulfillment and purpose.

What would you say to someone who is considering volunteering?

Honestly, it’s one of the most rewarding things you can do. You get to meet great people, give back to the community, and even learn new things along the way. For me, it’s been a great way to stay active, make friends, and feel like I’m making a real difference. You don’t need any special skills—just a willingness to help. And if you’re not sure where to start, try something small and see how you like it. I think you’ll find it’s not just about helping others, but also about what you gain from the experience. You should go for it!

How did you get started in volunteering?

It all started quite accidentally, I was living in New Westminster and they were looking for volunteers to help with First Night celebrations at Royal Centre on New Years Eve. I had nothing planned that year, so I volunteered. Then one of the organizers contacted me about volunteering at the Massey Theatre which I did and enjoyed very much. After that I moved to the Fleetwood area of Surrey and began to volunteer at the Bell Centre for the Performing Arts. Eventually, I became involved with the Sun Run Clinic as a Run Leader. After many other major events in both Vancouver and Burnaby, I heard the City of Surrey was looking for volunteers for the 2010 Olympic Celebration Site in Holland Park. I applied and was accepted. The rest is history.

What are your most memorable moments during your volunteer service?

The 2010 Olympics was so much fun and so are all the other events. And now that I am retired, volunteering keeps me busy and meeting some many wonderful people. Really enjoy meeting new people and staying active. Also I feel that giving back to society is very rewarding.

What kept you coming back to volunteer?

Personally, I think that volunteering is my addiction as I enjoy it very much.

What would you say to someone who is considering volunteering?

If anyone is considering volunteering, I just say Just Do It. You will not regret it.

Day Camps, Children Programs and Youth Leadership

Woman in a leafy dress standing in front of a colourful mural.

How did you get started in volunteering?

Originally, I was just a drop in youth and then I saw people who were volunteers at Newton Rec Centre, and I was like hey that sounds super fun, and like a great way to gain experience. I went onto the City of Surrey website, applied to be a volunteer and got accepted (Yay Me!). I started by assisting in the lounge and gym for drop-in youth programs and have also been occasionally asked to help with events.

What are your most memorable moments during your volunteer service?

My most memorable moments of being a volunteer are the evenings there was food to be cooked/prepped, I love to cook and bake in general, so it was super awesome to do it in the lounge and then serve food. Another memory I have is in the summer outside Newton Rec Centre on Wednesdays, I helped with an event where we had games and crafts outside and as a volunteer, I got to help monitor the stations and my favourite part was to play the games with the kids. There’s also a bunch of other things that made volunteering super enjoyable for me but that might turn this into an essay, so I am going to stick with those main points.

What kept you coming back to volunteer?

I think what kept me coming back to volunteer is that it was so fun and a good way to keep busy and get out of the house. Growing up recreation centres were always such a fun and inclusive place, and I think what kept and even sometimes still keeps me coming back to volunteer is that it’s a way to help support and give back to the community.

What would you say to someone who is considering volunteering?

I would and in fact I have said to some of my friends that if you have the time then you should definitely go onto the City of Surrey volunteering page and apply for what sparks your interest as there are tons of opportunities in different areas. I would also tell them about how fun of an experience volunteering for the City has been for me and how it can help with a number of things like, schooling, resumes, and even in my case volunteer experience was a leading factor that helped me get a job with the City. So, in the future if you want a job with the City, volunteering I think is a great route.

Adult and Seniors Services - English Conversation Program

How did you get started in volunteering?

I started volunteering by looking for opportunities that matched my interests and skills. Since I enjoy language and communication, helping students with conversational English felt like a natural choice. It’s been a rewarding experience, and I’ve learned just as much from them as they have from me.

What are your most memorable moments during your volunteer service?

Some of my most memorable moments have been when students who were initially shy finally gained the confidence to have a conversation in English. Seeing that growth and knowing I played a small part in it has been incredibly rewarding.

What kept you coming back to volunteer?

What keeps me coming back is the sense of fulfillment I get from helping others, and from seeing students grow in confidence and improve their English skills. It’s a small effort on my part, but it makes a tangible difference in their lives.

Every session is different, and I always learn something new—whether it’s about a student’s culture, a fresh perspective, or even a new way to explain something in English. It keeps things interesting and meaningful for me.

What would you say to someone who is considering volunteering?

I’d say go for it! Volunteering is one of the most rewarding things you can do. You don’t need to be an expert - just be willing to share your time and skills. Start small and see where it takes you.

It’s a great way to make a difference while also learning and staying connected with your community. You might be surprised at how much you enjoy it.

Day Camps, Surrey Art Gallery, Libraries, Surrey Youth Stewardship Squad, Surrey Steps Up.

Girl in a grey hoodie holding a small brown puppy indoors.

How did you get started in volunteering?

I began volunteering with the Reading Buddies program at Surrey Libraries, inspired by friends who had previously participated and enjoyed it. This opportunity allowed me to engage with children and help their literacy skills in an impactful way.

What are your most memorable moments during your volunteer service?

One of my most memorable moments as a volunteer was the different opportunities I received to connect with new people while giving back to my community. Though a particularly impactful experience was working with a child from the Day Camps program over the summer. When I first met him, he was extremely reserved and quiet, hesitant to engage with those around him. However, as I spent more time interacting with him, he gradually became more comfortable, exploring his surroundings and forming connections with his peers. He especially loved going to the park and racing with others, and it was evident how much more he was enjoying the camp compared to when he first started. Witnessing this shift was eye-opening, as it made me realize the impact I could have. Which only further reinforced my desire to continue making a difference and seek even greater opportunities to positively influence those around me.

What kept you coming back to volunteer?

What kept me coming back was the welcoming community and the unwavering support I received from those around me. The encouragement and sense of belonging made my volunteer experience not only meaningful but also very rewarding, motivating me to continue doing what I loved!

What would you say to someone who is considering volunteering?

I would encourage them to begin as soon as possible! Volunteering is an experience that allows you to build meaningful connections and develop valuable skills. It’s a special opportunity that allows you to make a real difference while also growing both professionally and personally!
