There are over 1100 bus stops in Surrey’s 380 square kilometres. Artist Sylvia Grace Borda has walked, biked, driven cars, or ridden buses along every transit route to take 1600 photographs for her exhibition Every Bus Stop in Surrey, BC in Surrey Art Gallery’s TechLab. She has come to know the city in a way few others have experienced it—and along the way has collected many stories about transit, neighbourhoods, and the best places to eat while waiting for a bus.
In Every Bus Stop in Surrey, BC, each of the 1100 best photos is shown for two seconds in a 38-minute slide show. Collectively, they are a kind of digital visual maphighlighting Surrey’s diverse geography, and creating a composite portrait of this growing city. The project also includes 100 photographs submitted by the public. Local visitors viewing the display quickly become engaged as they try to pinpoint the location of each image.
Every Bus Stop in Surrey, BC is part of an ongoing series by Borda that looks at cities around the world. Her Capital Cities project focussed on Tokyo and London’s transportation lines as a reflection of globalization and gentrification. Despite their cultural differences, her photographs show each city’s equal evidence of social migration, international architectural forms, and the cultivation of a working/commuter class of people.
