The flash game installation Apocalypse Tomorrow depicts an expansive seascape where the viewer-player, as a stoic, surfboarding monk, must avoid obstacles made up of familiar architectural forms and monuments from China’s recent past. Videos from the RMB City project are composed of montaged scenes incorporating a multiplicity of characters—including Cao Fei’s avatar China Tracy—within a fictional city collaged from existing cities in turn-of-the-millennium China.
Presented as part of the exhibition Cao Fei: Simulus and as part of Yellow Signal: New Media in China, which takes place in various venues throughout Metro Vancouver between March and September.
