Experience the beauty of nature with artworks that take you from the flowers of spring to the heat and light of lazy summer days. Surrey ArtsWest Society celebrates its 30th anniversary with the exhibition Brush of Spring. Visitors will see paintings and drawings in a range of media including watercolours, oil, and acrylics. Floral studies, animal imagery, as well as landscapes reflecting the artists’ travels are among the subjects explored. Different approaches to expressing the experience of nature in art are also demonstrated by ArtsWest members.
John Cranswick captures the dry heat and bright light of Baja California in his San Jose Ollas painting, a work so realistic it makes you hot just looking at it. Summer days beckon in Doris Biddle’s painting Living the Life, where she puts you on a sailboat traveling through the Gulf Islands through her masterful use of perspective. Tao Jiang’s Lighthouse presents a haunting image of isolation enhanced by the muted grey tones of the rocks. In contrast, Bamboo Fun by Art Giddings is a whimsical scene of children climbing and playing in a dense bamboo forest, like something out of a fairy tale. Of the animal artworks, two bald eagles soaring above a misty forest grab your attention with its realism and size in David Kilpatrick’s Spirit Catcher. Another pairing of animals can be seen in Nino Persiavi’s exquisite ballpoint pen drawing of two maturing horses titled Aging Gracefully.
