The mind of a teenager is a fascinating, complex, and curious thing to behold. Take a look at what teenagers in Surrey are exploring through the unique lens that art offers with the exhibition of Art by Surrey Secondary School Students. From realistic and conceptual portraits of themselves or of celebrities to detailed photographs and drawings mixing architecture with landscapes, this show presents a wonderful array of different mediums from local youth.
Visitors will see paintings, drawings, collages, and photographs accompanied by insights into the work through artist statements, and information on the goals and objectives of art education through teacher statements. These statements demonstrate the value of visual arts education, and often how it connects with other studies such as literature, history, science, and social studies in creative and innovative ways. This showcase of artworks, by 52 Surrey and White Rock students from grades 8 to 12 representing 10 schools, was developed jointly by the Surrey Art Gallery, Surrey School District, and Surrey Art Teachers Association to demonstrate the value of visual arts courses.
Art education is an essential part of our creative and intellectual development. The experiences obtained through the processes of art—from the original idea through to the realization of the work of art—assist us in our perception of, and response to, the world around us. Through art, students are able to develop their creative, cognitive, reasoning, and technical abilities while at the same time learn new ways to express themselves and communicate with others.
This bi-annual exhibition is developed in cooperation with the Surrey School District and the Surrey Art Teachers Association. Surrey Art Gallery has been presenting art by Surrey school students since 1983.
