Dog Ownership

All dog owners in Surrey are responsible for the care and welfare of the dogs they own. This includes providing adequate food, water, shelter, veterinary care and living conditions. The minimum standards that a dog owner is responsible for are outlined in the Surrey Animal Responsibility Bylaw. 

Dogs in Summer

When it's hot outside, we want to remind dog owners to never leave their dogs in their vehicles. Doing so may result in a bylaw violation ticket. The RCMP or the SPCA may also remove your animal from the vehicle if it is found to be in distress, resulting in charges.

Dogs on Beaches

Dogs are not allowed on Surrey beaches between May 15 and September 15 of each year. The exception to this is the off-leash area at Blackie Spit at Crescent Beach.

Off-Leash Areas

In general, dogs must be on-leash and under the control of a competent person whenever they are off the property they reside on. A dog caught running off-leash and at large will be impounded and taken to the Surrey Animal Resource Centre. Dogs may run off-leash on private property, as long as the area is fenced in.

Surrey has many off-leash parks where dogs are permitted to be off leash while still in the control of the competent person.
