Surrey, BC — Providing Surrey seniors with online celebratory and interactive activities is the focus for Surrey’s BC Seniors Week (June 1–8) this year. City of Surrey will host over 15 free activities and events online and by phone to celebrate seniors and promote the importance of maintaining social connections while practicing physical distancing. 

“With the physical distancing measures in place resulting from COVID-19, our city staff are continuously working to find innovative ways to keep our seniors engaged in the community. Surrey’s seniors will be able to participate, engage and connect during BC Seniors Week through the diverse online programming we are offering this year,” said Mayor Doug McCallum. “Keeping our seniors active, healthy and connected through recreational, arts and culture programming has always been and will always be a key priority for our city.”

BC Seniors Week is an annual celebration to acknowledge and celebrate the integral role seniors play in communities across British Columbia. City of Surrey will host a series of free, live registered programs and webinars, plus a variety of pre-taped activities, including:

  • Art lessons with local artist educators Alanna Edwards and Claire Moore
  • Literature club and book chat with Surrey Libraries
  • How to live well on retirement income webinar hosted by Credit Counselling Society
  • 75 ways to save on household expenses webinar hosted by Credit Counselling Society
  • Pat Chessell video concert hosted on Facebook Live
  • Stories from the past with City of Surrey heritage staff
  • Online fitness videos led by certified city instructors
  • Art in Conversation virtual art tour
  • Virtual tours of Darts Hill Garden Park
