Heritage is what we inherit from the past, value in the present, and plan to preserve for the future. Our historic roots stem from the influence of First Nations people and later settlers that harvested the trees, farmed the fertile soils, and established communities.
As a result, Surrey is rich in the diversity and variety of its built surroundings, cultural traditions, natural environments, and pastoral landscapes.
Efforts to conserve our heritage through City initiative extend to the 1970s when the first heritage site, the Semiahmoo Trail, was designated by Council. The Heritage Advisory Commission (then a Committee) came into being in 1976, the City's Heritage Register was established in 1997, and the City developed its Heritage Management Plan in 2000. More recently, in 2010, the City worked with the Heritage Advisory Commission and local heritage organizations to undertake a strategic review of the City's heritage policies, practices and resources. The resulting Heritage Strategic Review has created a renewed vision for Surrey's heritage program.
