Sustainability
Creating a More Sustainable Surrey
Sustainability is about balancing growth and development and natural ecosystems, and promoting quality of life for all who live, work, and visit Surrey. The City of Surrey is committed to making sustainability the cornerstone of all decision making so that Surrey remains the best place to work, visit, and live for generations to come.
Surrey is Ready to Lead in Sustainable Living
Surrey’s geography contributes to sustainability:
- Flanked by Boundary Bay to the south and the Fraser River to the north, Surrey is also shaped by the Serpentine and Nikomekl Rivers
- Surrey contains an extensive system of parks, trails, and urban forests
- Thirty percent of Surrey’s land base is agricultural
Surrey is home to a large and diverse community, the second largest municipality in BC, and one of Canada’s fastest growing cities:
- A population of over 470,000
- About 1,000 people moving to the City every month
A growing and changing population brings development, including:
- Affordable and diverse types of housing
- Community centres, parks, libraries and other services
- Schools
- Shops
- Jobs
With this rapid growth and rich geography, the City of Surrey is addressing important issues of sustainability including how we build, how to bring more jobs to the community, how people move around the City, and how they access services.
How Sustainability is Appearing in the Community
The City of Surrey is:
- Encouraging builders and developers to build “green” and strive to use fewer materials and build energy and water-efficient homes from renewable energy sources.
- Tracking and reducing greenhouse gas emissions; the City of Surrey is working to reduce its own carbon footprint and working with local businesses and others to address the impacts of climate change.
- Building a District Energy system in City Centre, and supporting the growth of clean energy and technology as the future driver of green jobs in the City.
- Reducing waste at City Hall, including at the City's major public events.
- Monitoring the city’s overall progress to becoming more sustainable. The City of Surrey has worked with the community to develop meaningful sustainability indicators that track and help report out on progress.
