Master Plan Update

On July 14, 2008, Surrey City Council adopted the Parks, Recreation & Culture Ten-Year Strategic Plan. A shorter Executive Summary is also available.

Process Description

The Parks, Recreation and Culture Mission Statement is:

To enhance the quality of life for the people of Surrey by working together to:

  • Protect our Natural Environment
  • Preserve our Heritage
  • Provide Parks for active and passive use
  • Ensure access to Recreational and Cultural opportunities

The City of Surrey is a leader in the delivery of parks recreation and cultural services for
its nearly 400,000 residents. Part of its success has always been thinking strategically
and selecting the most appropriate direction in which to proceed. The Strategic Plan is a
tool integral to ensuring that the needs of residents are met in the upcoming decade.

The make up and demographics of Surrey have changed since the 1996-2006 Master
Plan was crafted. Many components of the original plan have been completed over the
last 10 years and there are segments of the population that would benefit from being
more engaged. Many new recreation facilities have been constructed, but some
infrastructure is aging, and any thought of reinvestment in it must consider how relevant
existing facilities are in meeting future needs.

The Parks, Recreation & Culture department thank the community for their involvement in
this process, particuliarly for attending the many open houses.
