The Mayor and eight Councillors are the leaders of the City of Surrey. The people who live in Surrey chose who they want to lead them by voting in an election. Elections for a new Mayor and the Councillors take place every three years. You can vote when you are eighteen years old, until then you can remind your parents to vote every time there is an election.
The Mayor is the leader of the Councillors. He or she leads the Council Meetings where important decisions are made about the City. The Mayor is usually the one you read about in the newspaper or see on TV or hear on the radio. He or she answers questions and makes announcements on big events that happen in our City.
The Mayor represents all of the people that live and work in Surrey. At special events, the Mayor welcomes visitors and important people from other cities in Canada and around the world. The Mayor works very hard to make sure that the people who live and work in Surrey are safe, informed and proud of our City.
City Councillors are our neighbourhood leaders who help make decisions on how to run the City. The Councillors vote on these decisions at Council Meetings in City Hall. The Councillors vote on what they think is best for the people that live and work in Surrey. Their decisions take care of the people of Surrey by keeping our City safe, clean and by coming up with lots of fun activities for us to do.
