Translation – Explanation and Caution

The electronic translation service on the City of Surrey’s web site is hosted by Google Translate. The quality of the translation may vary in some of the languages offered by Google. The goal of the basic translation is to capture the general intention of the original English material.

Google Translate is a free service and currently offers translation in over 50 languages. Unfortunately, not all the languages spoken in the City of Surrey are translated. Punjabi is one of the languages not currently offered, and to remedy the situation, the City has been in contact with Google and they have committed to making Punjabi available in the future.

The City of Surrey cannot guarantee the quality, accuracy, or completeness of any translated information. Before you act on translated information, the City encourages you to confirm any facts that are important to you and the decisions you make.

ENERGYShift Youth Forum

On November 3rd, 2011 the City of Surrey hosted a youth forum to find out what tomorrow’s generation would like to see in their future. From dozens of creative, innovative and exciting ideas, here are a few highlights:

Buildings of the Future

  • All new buildings meet green space requirements through green roofs, living walls, or landscaping
  • Renewable energy is required on all new buildings, with wide-scale connection to district energy
  • Homes have increased insulation, south facing windows, and are modular to allow for flexibility over their lifetime

Getting Around Town

  • Free access to public transit is subsidized by taxes on car ownership
  • Separated bike lanes promote comfort and safety
  • Alternative vehicles have reserved parking spaces and fuelling stations

Garbage-Be-Gone

  • Garbage pickup is paid for on a per-bag basis instead of property taxes
  • Composting increases with community compost sites and city-wide collection
  • Water filling stations are found across the city

Water Wise

  • All toilets are low-flow and are flushed with grey water
  • District-wide rainwater collection system for irrigation

Food, Glorious Food

  • Community gardens in public space and schools
  • Pesticides are banned, and lawns are prioritized for food production

Urban Realm

  • Popular destinations are clustered together to reduce commuting
  • Density preserves valuable space and natural areas
  • Walking is encouraged through car-free areas and attractive green space

Getting the Word Out

  • Sustainability education is integrated into all curriculum
  • Community-wide events and local groups are supported
