About the Reggio Emilia Approach

"The child has a hundred languages, a hundred hands, a hundred thoughts, a hundred ways of thinking, of playing, of speaking…and a hundred, hundred more."
- Loris Malaguzzi

Reggio Emilia Approach is based on a comprehensive philosophy, supported by several fundamental, guiding principles. These principles are integrated, systemic philosophy, in which each principle both influences and is influenced by all of the other principles (Gemini, 1998).

The following principles represent a summary of what has been named by the educators in Reggio Emilia as the philosophy’s fundamental guidelines:

  • The child as protagonist, collaborator, and communicator
  • The teacher as partner, nurturer, guide, and researcher.
  • Cooperation as the foundation of the educational system.
  • The environment as the “third teacher.”
  • The Parent as Partner.
  • Documentation as communication.
