Surrey is home to more than 200 formally recognized built, natural, and cultural heritage properties and features that have been identified as having heritage value.

Heritage properties in Surrey are listed on either the heritage inventory or the community heritage register. Heritage properties can be both registered and protected. Heritage properties are protected by heritage revitalization agreement by-law, heritage designation bylaw, or heritage conservation covenant.

Heritage Inventory

Surrey's Heritage Inventory is a list of properties and features that potentially have heritage significance but require further evaluation before being considered by Council for addition to the City's Community Heritage Register. Properties and features are identified and added to this list by the Council or the Heritage Advisory Commission, City staff, heritage consultants, or the public.

Heritage Register

Each of Surrey's heritage resources has been thoroughly researched and evaluated, and subsequently added, by resolution of Council, to Surrey's Community Heritage Register. Properties and features listed on Surrey's Community Heritage Register are also listed in the Provincial Heritage Register and can be eligible for nomination to the Canadian Register of Historic Places.

Properties or features listed on Surrey's Community Heritage Register can become protected heritage properties. Approximately one third of the heritage resources listed on the Register have been protected by heritage designation bylaw, heritage revitalization agreement, or heritage conservation covenant.
