Keep your organics cart clean by following these handy tips. These tips will also help deter pests and minimize insects and odours.

Keep the Cart Clean:

  • Line the bottom of your cart with old newspaper, cardboard or a large paper leaf bag. Kraft yard waste bags are also available for a small fee at most City Recreation Facilities and at City Hall.
  • Wrap food scraps in newspaper, paper bags, paper towel, or cereal boxes before placing in your organics cart.
  • Layer food waste with yard trimmings.
  • Freeze meat scraps in a paper bag until collection day.
  • Wash your organics cart periodically.

Minimize Odours & Deter Pests:

  • Keep the lid of your cart closed.
  • Keep your cart in a shady area out of direct sunlight.
  • Freeze meat scraps in a paper bag until collection day.
  • Layer food waste with yard trimmings in your organics cart.
  • Sprinkle small amounts of baking soda over yard and food waste to decrease odour.
  • Wrap food scraps in newspaper, paper bags, paper towel, or cereal boxes before placing in your organics cart.
  • Set your organics cart out for collection every week, even if it is not full.
  • Wash your organics cart periodically.

Steps to Wash the Cart:

  1. Use water from a hose to rinse out your organics cart.
  2. Wash using a mild soap or a vinegar-water solution.
  3. Rinse the soapy water onto grass or gravel. Do not pour soapy water down outside drains. Soap clogs drains and pipes.
