City Hosts City Jam 2011 and the 16th Annual Youth Recognition Awards

The City of Surrey hosted the City Jam 2011 competition at the Fleetwood Community Centre on April 8th, 9th and 16th. City Jam is a competition for ALL types of musicians, bands and singers. In the past we have seen some amazing pianists, soloists, rock bands, drummers, guitarists and this year one of the finalists played the Guzheng, a traditional Chinese instrument. The winners in the preteen category were announced on April 16th.1st place in the preteen category went to Ben Dunnill, 2nd place went to Jenny K, and 3rd place went to Kelly Salmon. The winners in the youth category were announced at the Youth Recognition Awards on May 6th. Tommy Alto won 1st place, 2nd place went to Orbit and 3rd place went to Julia Han. These performers showcased their amazing talent at the 16th annual Youth Recognition Awards where Surrey’s young people were recognized for their positive contributions to their community and for fulfilling personal achievements. Recipients of this year’s Youth Recognition Awards were as follows:

• Ruthdol Ywaya was recognized in the Personal Achievement Category
• Aaron Wong was recognized in the Creative Contributions Category
• Samuel Chien was recognized in the Community Spirit Category
• Surrey Leadership Youth Council was recognized in the Team Spirit Category
• Erin Rosie and Selina Shivji were recognized in the Junior Achievement Category

The City of Surrey thanked Dream Nest Productions, Turtle Recording Studios, Digital Sound Magic Recording Studios, Richard Dolmat Photography, Long and McQuade, R & R Music Centre, Live Nation, Surrey School District #36, Guildford Town Centre, Cupe Local 402, Cloverdale Seniors Advisory Board and Xcalibur Bowling Centre for their sponsor contributions to the winners of City Jam 2011 and the recipients of the Youth Recognition Awards.
