City of Surrey Wins Financial Reporting Award
March 01, 2011
Surrey – For the 14th consecutive year, the City of Surrey has won the Canadian Award for Financial Reporting for excellence in governmental accounting and financial reporting.
“The City of Surrey is committed to openness and accountability at City Hall,” says Mayor Dianne Watts. “Each year we ensure our financial statements are presented in a clear and transparent fashion so that residents, businesses and other organizations have a full understanding of our financial picture. We are pleased to once again be recognized for those efforts.”
The award is presented by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) to organizations who demonstrate full disclosure in their annual financial report.
“It’s in the public’s best interest to have our reports written and organized in an easy to understand manner. We go beyond the minimum requirements of generally accepted accounting principles to provide full disclosure,” says Mayor Watts.
The GFOA is a non-profit professional association serving 17,400 government finance professionals in the U.S. and Canada. Reports submitted are reviewed by selected members of the GFOA professional staff and a review committee, which comprises individuals with expertise in Canadian public-sector financial reporting and includes financial statement preparers, independent auditors, academics, and other finance professionals.
